Kylee Latod Simpson, 18, of Liberty Church Road, Hickory, is being held in Catawba County jail after he was extradited on Friday from Burke County.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of a suspicious vehicle on Belmont Drive in Â鶹´«Ã½ at 5:16 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. While deputies were on the way to Belmont Drive, other callers reported a vehicle accident on Hopewell Road near Belmont Drive, a release from the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies arrived to find an overturned vehicle with no one in it, prompting officers to close the road and divert traffic, the release said.
Deputies later found Simpson, the driver, and a passenger, a 17-year-old, on Clark Loop south of Â鶹´«Ã½. Simpson and the 17-year-old were taken by EMS to UNC Health Blue Ridge for treatment, the release said.
Deputies found that Simpson had an active full extradition warrant from Hickory Police Department on attempted first-degree murder charges, the release said.
After he was medically cleared, Burke County deputies took Simpson to the Burke/Catawba County line, where Hickory Police took custody, according to the release.
In April, Simpson was charged with seven counts of attempted murder and seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after a shooting outside Party City in Hickory.
The warrants were issued after Simpson was indicted on the attempted first-degree murder charges by a Catawba County grand jury. The indictments stem from the Party City shooting case, Hickory police said.
Simpson had a court date on the Catawba County charges on Monday. He is being held in Catawba County on a $400,000 bond, according to Catawba County.
Simpson was charged with traffic violations in Burke County for failure to report an accident, no operator’s license, reckless driving to endanger, driving left of center and exceeding safe speed. He has a court date on the Burke County charges on Dec. 18, according to the state court system.
