The Â鶹´«Ã½ campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics may double its student population, according to the state Senate budget for the upcoming year.
N.C. Senate Bill 257, which is the state Senate’s proposed 2025-2027 budget, says the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and the chancellor of school of science and math, may study the possibility of increasing the size of the Â鶹´«Ã½ campus, develop a plan to accommodate at least twice as many students at the school and report the plan by Feb. 15, 2026.

The bill says the plan should include an analysis of the number of students with excellent academic records who apply to the school but are not accepted because of lack of physical space or other resources.
The study would also analyze the resources needed to accommodate more students and the cost of that expansion, including improvements to physical spaces such as residence halls, additional faculty and staff, instructional materials and other costs.
The Â鶹´«Ã½ school of science and math campus currently has 300 students enrolled. The Durham campus has 680 students, according to the school. The school had nearly 2,000 rising high school juniors apply for admission to the school in 2024.
The Â鶹´«Ã½ campus opened in 2022 with 150 juniors, adding another 150 students the following year.
The N.C. House of Representatives also is expected to release its proposed two-year budget soon. The deadline for bills to be introduced to be considered by the other chamber is May 8, said N.C. Rep. Hugh Blackwell, R-Burke.
Once the House of Representatives releases its budget, the two chambers will hash out a budget and then vote on it. N.C. Gov. Josh Stein released his proposed budget in mid-March.
