Patriot grave marker dedication
The Colonel Alexander Erwin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a have patriot grave marking honoring William Cuthbertson, P-142917, at 11 a.m. at Lake James State Park.
DAR marker dedication The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a DAR/Pomeroy Foundation Revolution Series Marker at Obeth Cemetery in Lake James State Park at 2 p.m. in honor of three DAR patriots buried there: the Rev. William Fullwood, the Rev. John Gibbs and Lawrence Unger.

Membership tea
Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Unit 43, will have a membership tea from noon to 2 p.m. at DAV Chapter 43, 2778 DAV Ave., Âé¶¹´«Ã½. All members and guest are invited to attend. Those planning to attend should call 828-413-5048 no later than Monday, April 21, to help with planning food.

Membership celebration service
The Burke County NAACP will sponsor a membership celebration service at 4 p.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 4427 Berry School Ave., Valdese. The pastor is the Rev. Wesley Hendrix. The church’s Mass Choir will render music. The program will feature a forum focusing on NAACP membership. Each church that participated in the 2025 membership campaign will receive a certificate of participation.
Artists’ reception
The Rock School Arts Foundation will celebrate its next exhibitions, “A Woman’s Point of View†by Barry G. Huffman and the Piedmont Painters’ “Ventures in Painting,†with an artists’ reception from 2-4 p.m. The art will be displayed in Galleries II and I, respectively, at the Old Rock School, 400 Main St. W., Valdese, through May 16.

career workshop
Western Piedmont Community College will host a criminal justice career workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Carr Hall lobby on campus, 1001 Burkemont Ave., Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Join criminal justice career faculty and alumni for a networking opportunity and find out where a criminal justice degree can lead you. Representatives from law enforcement, 911, administration, advocacy and corrections will share their stories and career advice with students.

Western Piedmont Community College’s Horticulture Program will host a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the WPCC Greenhouse, 200 Patrick Murphy Drive, Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Only cash and checks will be accepted. A variety of pollinators, native plants, herbs, annuals, vegetables and more will be available.
NAACP meeting
The Burke County NAACP Unit No. 5367 will meet at the Mountain View Community Recreation Center, 645 1st St., Morganton, at 6 p.m. Several important items will be discussed as the organization plans events to celebrate its 90th anniversary. All members are encouraged to attend. Social distancing and healthy protocols will be practiced.

Yard sale
The Burke County Cooperative Extension will hold a yard sale at the Burke County Fairgrounds, 145 Bost Road, Morganton, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The master gardeners’ plant sale will also be at the fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to noon. Vendors and food trucks also will be on-site.
SUNDAY, MAY 4 Spring concert
The Foothills Festival Singers will hold a concert at 5 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Âé¶¹´«Ã½. The choir, made of 43 local singers and directed by Freedom High School Choral Director Robert Summerell and retired FHS choral director Jim Gossler, is free and open to the public, but donations will be taken during the performance to help with expenses.
Church homecoming First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine, 67 Hennessee St., Morganton, will celebrate homecoming and its 143rd anniversary at 10:30 am. with guest speaker Rev. Eldon Hinegardner and special music by Small Town Sunday, which was named the best country gospel group of 2024 by Gospel Music Fan Fair.

Early Childhood and Education Career Expo
Western Piedmont Community College will host an early childhood and education career expo from 4-6 p.m. in the lower level of Hildebrand Hall on the school’s campus, 1001 Burkemont Ave., Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Food will be available while supplies last and local child care providers, agencies, schools and educational programs will be on site. Swag bags will be given to the first 20 participants.
