Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies carried the Special Olympics torch through downtown Morganton, up South Sterling Street, down Enola Road and onto the field at Patton High School for the 2025 Special Olympics spring games on Friday.

Burke County Sheriff Banks Hinceman said it’s one of his favorite days of the year.

“I look forward to the Special Olympics day every year, and it’s just such a special day. ... It’s heartwarming,” Hinceman said.

The route previously saw law enforcement officers carry the torch through the county to Hickory Police Department in Catawba County, but they decided to change it so those carrying the torch could go on to volunteer at the Special Olympics after the run, said 鶹ý Public Safety Assistant Chief Keith Bowman.

“We added that last year and this is our second year doing that,” Bowman said. “That’s what makes it really special.”
