A man died Thursday afternoon in a crash on N.C. Highway 181 north of Â鶹´«Ã½.
Rex Ivy Powell, 67, of Morganton, was driving a Nissan Frontier pickup truck north on the highway near Bowman Avenue and Carl Freeman Avenue when a FedEx truck attempted to cross the highway from a stop sign at Bowman Avenue, according to information from Trooper Chris Casey with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The wreck happened at about 1:40 p.m.
The FedEx truck hit Powell's truck.
Powell's truck hit the guardrail and overturned, Casey said. Powell was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.Â
The driver of the FedEx truck, 27-year-old Talmadge James Belcher, of Lenoir, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield right of way, Casey said.
The road was partially closed for about two hours during the investigation.
